Carme Aliaga was born in 1971 in Terrassa, a small city near Barcelona where she still lives. Since early childhood she knew she would be a painter. In 1994 she received a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona. During her first professional years she painted while being a high school teacher, but in the year 2000 she decided to fully commit herself to painting. The common thread behind Aliaga’s pictorial works is the mystery of the passing of time on matter and all that surrounds us. Her first works were strongly influenced by ancient Mediterranean civilizations; her paintings show the thumbprint of humankind without its presence, overlapping layers and colours as on a street wall which suffered the harshness of weather. This influence can still be seen in Aliaga’s contemporary works which are based on travel posters of the ‘20s, with their typographies and sense of travel seen as the channel for connecting cultures. The main themes, such as ships and airplanes, always appear damaged by the passing of time. In the last years Aliaga has regularly exhibited her paintings in Barcelona, Madrid and Paris, as well as in national and international Art Fairs in Europe and Latin America. Her artworks can currently be found in public and private collections. Besides painting, Carme Aliaga has also experimented with engravings, lithographies and book illustrations
